Lionel Steinberg graduated from Medical School at the University of Cape Town in 1983, before moving to Melbourne to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology. He has also practised in Essex, England. Since arriving in Melbourne and making Australia his home, Lionel has been a familiar presence in the city’s best labour wards.
Affectionately known by his patients and colleagues as ‘Vaginal Lionel’ for his preference for a low-intervention, vaginal birth and low caesarean rate, he is particularly sought after to help women achieve vaginal birth after a previous caesarean section and naturally deliver babies who are breech.
Core to Lionel’s professional practice is his commitment to the ethos of life-long learning. He is pro-active in keeping abreast of the latest medical advancements and subscribing to best-practice in his field. He also supervises medical students, specialist trainees and midwives in the area of complex vaginal births.
