Heartburn typically occurs in the last 12 weeks of pregnancy. Hormones can lead to regurgitation of stomach contents creating burning in the lower part of the oesophagus. As baby and uterus grow, they press on the stomach and displace it. This pushes the acid contents out into the oesophagus, creating heartburn.

Avoid foods you identify that give you heartburn

Avoid spicy or greasy foods

Avoid coffee (it can irritate the stomach making heartburn worse)

Eat small frequent meals rather than 3 large ones

Eat slowly

Chew food thoroughly when eating

Drink plenty of fluids between meals, rather than with them

Dress comfortably and make sure clothing loose around the waist

Drink milk (may be warmed) before going to bed

Sleep partially sitting up, well supported by lots of pillows

Some teas to try – peppermint tea, chamomile tea

Steep some root ginger or fennel seeds or aniseed in boiling water and drink the liquid

Sip lemon juice in water as desired

Chew raw almonds

Drink milk and eat yoghurt as desired

Sometimes bread or products containing yeast can make it feel worse so avoid them

Try to practice relaxation exercises and techniques

Sit upright when seated in chairs

Sit on the floor and stretch the abdomen - join hands and raise arms above the head as high as possible. After this, lower them and repeat entire movement

Slippery elm powder – take ½ teaspoon 2-3 times a day (lozenges are also available)

  • DO NOT  take Alka Seltzer / Bicarb Soda as they can upset acid/alkaline balance
