What is circumcision?
All baby boys have a piece of skin, known as the foreskin, that covers the tip of the penis. Circumcision is a straightforward procedure to remove the foreskin, and although controversial is ultimately the choice of the parents.
The benefits of circumcision include a reduction in the risk of:
- penile cancer
- phimosis (tightening of the foreskin)
- the transfer of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) – which is one of the causes of cervical cancer in women
What does the procedure involve?
The procedure can be performed in Lionel’s consulting suites on babies up to 4 weeks of age. A Gomco Clamp is used to protect the glans of the penis from injury and in total the procedure should take five minutes. A small amount of local anaesthetic will help to settle the baby.
After-care information will be given to you on the day of the circumcision. You will need kitchen salt and Vaseline for your son, along with a few extra cuddles.
