Nausea and vomiting seem to occur most on an empty stomach and when blood sugar levels are low. The symptoms usually go away after the first 12 -16 weeks of pregnancy.

Eat something high protein before going to bed

Avoid spicy, greasy foods, coffee, alcohol

Eat 4-6 small meals rather than 3 large ones each day to keep sugar levels constant

Try to drink fluids in between meals rather than with them

Have rest times during the day when possible

Have some dry biscuits by the bed to eat in the morning, then wait 10 minutes before getting

Vitamin B6 supplements can help – 25mg tablets, take up to 75 mgs/day maximum

Food sources of vitamin B6 include green leafy vegetables, wholegrain cereals, brown rice, corn, oil, prunes, egg yolk, molasses, honey

Sip soda water or lemonade – remove the lid to allow ‘fizz’ to reduce before drinking

Open bedroom window for fresh air at night

Gently exercise each day

Ginger – Drink some ginger ale or add grated or sliced root ginger to weak black tea and sip when nauseated or swallow 3-4 ginger capsules in the morning (500mg capsules)

Drink apple cider vinegar –dilute 1 tablespoon in a cup of warm water

Eat (acidophilus) yoghurt or grate an apple and eat it
