PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal abnormality affecting women of reproductive age, the most common cause of infertility and an important precursor of metabolic disorders such as heart disease and diabetes.

PCOS affects up to an estimated 10 percent of females and is associated with an increased risk of obesity and diabetes, and a possible increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The syndrome is characterised by the presence of polycystic ovaries, irregular ovulation and menstruation and hyperandrogenism (a condition caused by excess male hormones or male-like traits). Symptoms of PCOS may vary.
